Have you seen the film Becoming Jane (《珍奥斯汀少女日记》)? Jane Austen was one of the most influential and admired English novelists. In her works, she described upper-class people in England in the 17th and 18th centuries, their romances, their values and their shortcomings (缺点) with detachment (不偏不倚) and humour (幽默感). Do not forget that she was a delicate (灵敏的) writer who demonstrated her sensitivity and wit in her well-structured, satirical (讽刺性的) romances. People still enjoy reading her novels though they were written more than two hundred years ago.

Intermediate readers:
Pride and Prejudice
At first, Mr Darcy is admired for his fine figure and his income of £10,000 a year. He is far more a subject of attention than Mr Bingley. However, people soon regard him contemptuously (轻蔑地) as they are disgusted with his pride. At a party, Elizabeth Bennet overhears Mr Darcy telling Mr Bingley he would not dance with her because she is not handsome enough to tempt (吸引) him. Elizabeth, thinking Mr Darcy is an awkwardly proud man, has a strong prejudice (偏见) against him and shows much dislike whenever they meet. Will Elizabeth reconsider her opinion of Mr Darcy? What is Mr Darcy's true character? What will happen between them?
Emma
Emma Woodhouse, a beautiful, clever and rich girl, enjoys arranging marriages between her friends and her neighbours in the village of Highbury. She particularly cares about Harriet (a friend of hers who is lovely but shy), but she almost misses her own chance of love. At first she thinks little of Mr Knightly. However, after they have met, he is always eager to learn more about Emma. Mr Knightly and Emma get to know each other more when they try to get along with each other. Will Emma be lucky?
Advanced readers:Sense and Sensibility
The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, 19 and 17. Elinor is sensible and rational, while Marianne is wildly romantic. About Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor (求婚者) for Elinor's hand, she says that, while her sister loves him tenderly, she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for Elinor.
Marianne soon meets Mr Willoughby, a new neighbour, who measures up to her ideals. So swept away by her passion is Marianne that her behaviour begins to border on the scandalous (可耻). Willoughby abandons her, while Elinor's growing affection for Edward Ferras suffers a setback when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. The heart of the novel is about how they react to their misfortunes (噩运) and what lessons they draw from their experiences. The novel by Jane Austen shows that a truly happy marriage exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure.

Fanny Price is a pretty but sickly and timid (胆小害羞的) girl. She is taken from her impoverished (穷困的) home to the estate of Sir Thomas Bertram, her wealthy uncle. There she is tormented (作弄、折磨) by her aunt Norris and disliked by her cousins Tom, Maria, and Julia. She is befriended only by Edmund, her cousin. Sadly, she is more like a servant in the house.
While Uncle Bertram is away on business, Henry Crawford and Mary, her sister, both lively and charming, come to stay at a nearby parsonage (牧师公馆). Fanny then witnesses the moral decline of her uncle's household into flirtatious (爱调情的) and inappropriate relationships and the demonstration of its members' illicit desires. What role does Fanny play in the house afterwards? Does she find her love?
