1.By Jaime FlorCruz CNN Beijing Bureau Chie: Such telling video has rarely been shown by domestic media so extensively and so quickly after a national disaster.CCTV, China's state-run television network, as well as some local TVstations, have interrupted their regular programming to provide 24-hourcoverage of the disaster. Such swift reaction and extensive news coverage has not been seen in previous disasters
2.As a result of the one-child policy, the quake -- alreadyresponsible for at least 15,000 deaths -- is producing another tragicaftershock: Not only must thousands of parents suddenly copewith the loss of a child, but many must cope with the loss of theironly child.
China's population minister recently praised theone-child rule, which dates to 1979, saying it has prevented 400million children from being born.
Some wealthy families ignore the order, have more children and pay a$1,000 fine. In rural areas -- like earthquake-devastated Sichuanprovince -- families can petition for an additional child, but there'sno guarantee the authorities will approve the request -- they usuallydon't.
