On October 26, 2001, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that the Lockheed Martin X-35 series of Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) concept demonstration aircraft had won the JSF competition and that it would subsequently enter into the $18.9 billion System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase. Lockheed Martin is teamed with Northrop Grumman (NorthGrum) and British Aerospace (BAe)/Marconi Electronic Systems (MES)collectively known as "BAE Systems."

Shortly after being accepted, the JSF was given the official Department of Defense designation "F-35." The F-35 series of multi-role fighters will include the F-35A, F-35B and F-35C. The F-35A will be the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) version for the U.S. Air Force; the F-35B will be the carrier-based (CV) version for the U.S. Navy; and the F-35C will be the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) version for the U.S. Marine Corps and the UK's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

The first SDD airplane is a lot number-one USAF F-35A and is scheduled to arrive at the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, California, in October 2005. More than 6,000 F-35s are to be procured over the life of the program, and it is to be the world's premier strike fighter through the year 2040.

Simultaneously, Pratt & Whitney (P&W) Military Engines was awarded a $4.8 billion contract to develop the F135 series of engines for the F-35 aircraft. The three versions of the F-35 will be powered by three versions of the 40,000-pound-thrust class P&W F135 engine; they will include the F135-PW-100, F135-PW-400 and F135-PW-600. The F135-PW-100 will power the USAF F-35A; the F135-PW-400 will power the USN F-35B; and the F135-PW-600 will power the USMC/RAF/RN F-35C. The first production F135 engine for operational service is scheduled for delivery in 2007. The F135 engine will power at least the first five production lots of F-35 aircraft. -Steve Pace
